More travel planned for 2022 than in 2019, says new independent research

Brits say they plan to travel more this year than in 2019, according to new research from Ipsos MORI for Tripadvisor.

In a large survey of 10,000+ 18-75 year olds, Ipsos MORI and Tripadvisor looked to the year ahead for travellers and uncovered plenty of interesting details.

  • 78% of respondents said that they are likely to travel for leisure in 2022, compared to 72% of those who said that they travelled for leisure in 2019.
  • 38% said that travelling to a destination they’ve never been to before would be more important to them now, compared to trips they took in 2019.
  • And a quarter of UK travellers said it is more important now than before the pandemic to splurge on a big trip.

Plus, 85% of UK travellers surveyed said they were likely to travel in 2022 for leisure, business or to see friends/family.

Speaking about the research, Kanika Soni, chief commercial officer at Tripadvisor, said:

Consumers across the globe still want to travel and explore. This is evident in our month-over-month search data which shows a consistent, healthy increase in page views post-Christmas. Travellers are quickly adapting to local public health conditions, with cleanliness and safety remaining important factors in their planning

All this backs up the trends we’re seeing from customers, who are booking bigger and better holidays right through to 2024 already.

And people seem to really want some winter sun, with a massive 40% of bookings last week due to depart in this winter season.

Top destinations included the Canary Islands as well as several other key European short-haul destinations like Greece.
